A Guide to Memorable Family Photoshoots

There’s a certain kind of feeling that comes over you when you look through old photos.

The sounds, the laughter, the way everything felt in that moment comes rushing in like it never left. A single photo has the power to place you there again, even years later. That’s what makes family photos so meaningful.

They become the doorway back to moments you didn’t realize would one day mean everything.

What You Actually Want From Your Photos

It’s easy to think the goal is getting everyone to look at the camera and smile, when really it is often the candid or unplanned moments that create the most authentic and memorable photos. Honest interactions that are created in-between. Giggles, playfulness and silliness between siblings allow for a great session that doesn’t feel overly staged or forced.

I lead with gentle guidance so you feel comfortable settling in, but also space to move, talk and interact the way you normally would. When that happened, expressions soften and everything starts to feel effortless.

Studio or Outdoors

I love studio sessions as they offer a timeless quality to them. Clean backdrops, controllable lighting, a calm environment which allows you to slow down and not have the stimulus of the outdoors interfering.

That being said, outdoor sessions are beautiful and bring a different feel. I use them for many of my Creative Mini Sessions throughout the year. They offer stunning backdrops of colourful hues – green trees, blue skies, golden hour and the wide array of flowers that grow throughout New Brunswick.

Why It Matters More Over Time

The photos you take now will mean something different later.

As time moves forward, they become a way to revisit a season you can’t return to. A reminder of what your family looked like, but more importantly, what it felt like to be in it.
That’s the part that lasts.
